How to Kick the Blues When Life Gives You Lemons

Sometimes life can be one big roller coaster ride. The ups and downs can bring fantastic delight one day, and then frustrating turns the next.

It is during those discouraging times that it's hardest to pick up and move on. So during those moments, if you need a little boost, I have compiled a few reminders about the benefits of avoiding the Kleenex box and looking ahead:

Be grateful for what you've got: When life really challenges you, take a look around and realize that most likely, things are still pretty damn good. Many places in the world are experiencing challenges unlike anything we could ever fathom; dealing with tragedies of monumental degrees. Try to remember and appreciate the really wonderful people, ideas, and opportunities that you have afforded to you.

Laugh: It might seem crazy, but the benefits of laughing have been studied extensively. Psychologists have found that in addition to its domino effect, laughter also triggers healthy physical changes in the body. It will boost your energy, help you to forget about pain, and lessen the effects of stress.

Rally: During somber times, being around people who love and understand you can be powerfully rewarding. Even if you can't visit face-to-face, call up a friend, email a loved one, find the special people in your life who you know will listen and offer up a dose of love. Even if the visit or chat lasts just a short while, the affirmation of companionship can do wonders for your mood.

Think ahead: While trying times feel like they will last forever, the reality is that once you move past it and look back upon that small era in your life, you usually wonder while you sulked the day away. So try to fast-forward and shove yourself out of the funk, knowing that your positive perspective will chase the gray clouds away.
