Word of the Day: April 15, 2009 ~ dromedary

dromedary (drom-i-der-ee) - noun

A dromedary is "the single-humped camel, Camelus dromedarius, of Arabia and northern Africa."

First used in the written form around 1300–1350. From the Middle English word dromedarie; the Old French word dromedaire; and Late Latin dromedārius, which meant "a kind of camel."

In Latin: dromas means "camel." This in turn was derived from the Greek dromás, meaning "runner" a close relative of dromós, meaning "running." Dromas kamelos, meant "running camel."
