proximity (prok-sim-i-tee) - noun

Proximity means "nearness in place, time, order, occurrence, or relation."

First used in the written form around 1475–85. From the Latin proximitās, which means "nearness" or "vicinity" (was the superlative form of an unrecorded proqe, a variant of prope, from which English gets approach and propinquity). From it were formed the verb proximāre, meaning 'come near,' the ultimate source of the English word approximate. The Middle French word proximité also means "nearness."
