Introspection as I Approach 40: Why Age Doesn't Matter

As I cruise on closer to hitting the big 4-0, I suppose it’s normal that I ponder the big picture of my life. Not that the number forty is really all that different from thirty-nine, but there’s just something about moving out of the now-comfortable sounding “thirty” preface into the seemingly daunting “f-word” overture.

I’ve never really been one to buy into the myth of age expectations. I mean, nobody has ever lived my life before, so how would THEY know what’s optimum conventionality, right? Still though, certain milestones grab your attention and since I’ll be blowing out the candle on my vegan cupcake in nearly two months, I’ve been mulling over things more often than I normally do.

In doing so, I’ve been reflecting on how much my mindset has changed in the last few years; gaining a new perspective regarding the priorities in my life. I have realized the beauty of minimalism and simplicity. I have given away (or thrown out) more than half of my belongings. Our family moved to a smaller abode and decided to be more conscious of choices we make in regards to our lifestyle, buying habits, eating habits, and humanitarianism.

I have more intently zeroed in on my goals and recognized that many had been laying stagnant for too long. One such aspiration being to FINALLY follow my heart in regards to career paths. Changes have been made and it’s going to take awhile for all to come to complete fruition, but the most satisfying aspect is knowing that the shift was started. Now it’s up to me to kick it into gear.

Though I have been an avid fitness enthusiast nearly all my life, during this past year I revisited a long-lost passion that landed me back in the pool. I’ve had ups and downs with the sport, and have had to adjust the way in which I handle self-induced pressure and expectations; but for now, I’m just concentrating on enjoying the ride (or the swim, I should say).

I’m constantly learning how to find contentment. To appreciate the little things. To share what I know and to unearth what I am yet to discover. It’s the journey of life, I suppose. Entering into a new decade of expeditions and expectations…welcoming the forties as I prepare to exit from the thirties.

Having the opportunity to write, learn, and share on this site has benefited me tremendously. It has served as a motivator, a hub of support, and a catalyst for introspection. Those who visit here, read my blogs, lend encouragement, and take the time to return are appreciated beyond measure. So, thank you. Thank you so much.

I know it sounds cliché, but I really do feel like life has just begun in many ways. As the timeless Mark Twain once said,

“Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter.”

Indeed.
