Huh? What Miss California Thinks of Gay Marriage

Listen as Miss California stumbles through her answer during the Miss USA Pageant; replying to Perez Hilton's question regarding same sex marriage.  She says, "I think it's great that Americans are able to chose one or the other." Oh, they are? Ummm, in how many states is that choice possible?

"We live in a land where you can choose same sex marriage or opposite marriage."  Really, you can?  And what exactly is OPPOSITE MARRIAGE anyway? (lol)

She then goes on to say, "You know what?  In my country and in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anyone out there; but that's how I was raised and that's how I think, that it should be between a man and a woman. Thank you."

Ugh!

Well, there are many things I disagree with in your comment. Miss California does have the right to believe as she likes. If she had given a coherent response to the question, this would be a different situation. Simply put, she sounds like she lacked any knowledge of this subject, except what her parents had taught her (ie: "that's how I was raised") Additionally, she lacked the ability to talk in a public setting, which is what they were being judged on.

Now to go off topic and address a few of your other issues (sorry Jinxi for clogging up your blog with this stuff)

I fail to see how disagreeing with a statements about how male ends do not fit and that nature dictates that homosexuality is not natural, is intolerance. If you know anything about Steve Finley (guy who left the above comment), it is that he is condescending and not open to anyone's opinions. He has been trying to get Jinxi to debate him on his terms for years now.

As for doing research, um do you mean read the propaganda on your reading list? I will be happy to read anything written about Jesus by one of his contemporaries. Please provide me with a list and I will get them this week and start my education. Remember though, it has to be by one of Jesus' contemporaries. I will give you a little help; they do not exist. Which then leads to the next logical question. How is it that Jesus did all of the miraculous things during the last 3 years of his life, yet NOBODY wrote about it? There were plenty of historians around who wrote about everyday life and nobody mentioned anything about Jesus.

Please do not list the old tired group of Pliny the Younger, Tacitus, Josephus or the few others often cited. All of them were born after the alleged existence of Jesus and hence not contemporaries.

Keep in mind that every major religion has old text that support their beliefs. Many Christians discount those texts as being myth, yet they hold up their text as being factual. It is easy to argue that Jesus was simply a mythical character just like so many others, ie Hercules. Hercules and Jesus had almost identical life stories, however, Hercules predates Jesus.

The rest of the dribble about this being a nation based in christianity and christians being the ones who fought for our freedoms, wow, this is an amazing statement. A cursory study of our founding fathers will show you that not all of them were "christians" in fact many of them were not. this is not to say that they lacked a belief in a higher power, however, they also lacked many of the understandings about our universe that we have today. Even for those who were Christian many of them recognized the importance of keeping religion out of the public realm.

I very much know your "side" of the argument. Please keep in mind that I could care less if you are straight or gay. I could care less if you agree with homosexuality or same sex marriage. I do care, however, if you support a way of thinking which is intended to hold down a particular group of people. It is not intolerant to be against bigotry, especially when that bigotry is institutionalized as in this case. Your bigotry is no different than those before you who supported seperate drinking fountains, racial purity in marriage, etc etc etc. I would bet money that you would not support those groups (assuming you are not a member of the Arian Nation), yet you find it odd that those in the underdog position are upset that you want to keep them down.

@ Marc

I assume you were talking to Steve Finley above?

So I've read all comments on this...and one thing rings true.....Christians will be persecuded no matter what!!! I lost a friend over 20+ years because of this very topic....He aksed me to be in his wedding(he is gay),and what could I do? betray my God and the convictions of my soul? or turn my face from Jesus and stand by my friend in a unholy union???? at the end of all this(life) I will have to answer to my God,not my gay friend.
Christians don't(or should not) judge anyone, including gay people!! they are people with hearts and souls(yes I still have many gay friends) and the Christians that judge, and ridicule gays just make my skin crawl!!! how dare you judge them!!!! Even if you don't agree,or have the same beliefs...what is stopping you from loving them? don't let hate rule your heart.

I don't understand why Perez Hilton is taken so seriously -- he's a self-proclaimed media clown; he dances around in front of people hoping to get their attention

I think the reason it is so iinfuriating to us Jeanna, is that those who oppose gay marriage somehow paint THEMSELVES as victiims while they are busy trying to make sure other human beings don't have the same rights. If you want to understand it better, replace "gay"with "black" or "female" and see how ignorant the argument really is.

Christians are persecuted because they WANT to be persecuted. They (and by they I do not mean the normal believers, the ones who understand Jesus's message without picking and choosing pieces of the Bible to suit them and throwing away the stuff that doesn't) think it somehow brings them closer to God. I'm hoping for a front row seat when they find out they weren't really supposed to be judging all along.

I keep wondering when someone will point out that marriage of choice is something that has only been around Western civilization about 200 to 300 years, and in other cultures less than 100. I work with professionals from India that all had arranged marriages in the past 15 years, and their country has 4 times the population of the US.

If someone wants to be all religious and say that Jesus sanctioned their marriage process they are living in some sort of fantasy world. In Jesus' time, the marriages were arranged by parents -- and were about property. If you believe in traditional marriage, then you should have let your parents pick your mate!

Hahaha...uhh...

For about seven lines worth of talking, she's sure been ragged more than Barack Obama was after 100 days in Office. It's kinda ironic - everyone's reading into her statement, saying "She didn't know this, she wasn't aware of that, she's so ignorant" and we don't really know whether or not she really was like this. Her comments would strictly pertain to this question - it really is futile to analyse it in some attempt to justify attacking her.

What is so scary about letting go of the those beliefs ever so tightly that we have such anger, hatred, violence, murder etc against any human being no matter how different?

We need to get past this already. Let go of how you think others should live their lives and live your own at this very moment.

Open your heart and close your mind to see people as a life not the boundries, labels they or you put on them.

No one human being is superior .Sorry if you see or feel anything less than that.
