Word of the Day: April 9, 2009 ~ supercilious
supercilious (soo-per-sil-ee-uhs) –adjective
The word supercilious means "haughtily disdainful or contemptuous, as a person or a facial expression;" most notably, "lifted eyebrows."
Was first used in the written form around 1520-1530. It comes from the Latin word supercilium, which means "haughtiness." Split supercilium up and you've got super, meaning "above" and cilium, meaning, "eyelid."
Raise your eyebrows and there you are, the picture of disdain.
