Anchor Threatens to Punch Gay Activist On The Air (Video)

Doug McKelway, a co-host on News Channel 8 had Mike Rogers, a gay rights activist on his show. Rogers runs the website BlogActive and exposes what he calls "government hypocrisy" where he lists the names of politicians who vote against gay rights issues and who may be gay themselves.

During the interview, McKelway loses his cool and tells Rogers that he would like to take him outside and punch him across the face (@ around 3:00).

What do you think about Rogers' website and his tactics?  What do you think about McKelway's remarks during this interview segment?

while i feel that "outing" people isn't acceptable for any reason simply because what someone does in their home/bedroom/love life is their own personal choice and business...i do believe that hypocrisy by government leaders, especially leaders from any community or group of people that put themselves in the public eye and make decisions that effect lots of other people should probably be held to a different standard...and if you're glbt and you're voting against any form of equal rights then you probably need to be more concerned with your sanity than with being "outed"....
the male reporter is passionate about what he's saying but that in no right gives him a reason for threatening anyone else for expressing their own opinions and thoughts.journalists and newscasters are supposed to be there to report the news and stories, not act like judge, jury and punisher based on their personal beliefs.if i were his boss he'd be looking for a new job,not because of his opinions but because of his threats of physical violence as a reaction to someone's,a guest at that, freedom of speech.

To me, it looks like the co host has gay tendencies himself and rather than face and embrace, he is furious with denial. He was very very angry before the interview even got going. sad

I applaud the discussion. It goes right to the heart of a very difficult situation that has been avoided for too long in one of our more pervasive public arenas. I appreciate the graciousness and professionalism demonstrated by both the hosts and the guest in discussing one very tough subject.

wow, what a foolish interview, not only confusing, but myself being gay, nothing was set in stone in that interview, just a bunch of blabbing back and forth...in my opinion, everyone has the right to come out...who ever has a problem with it is foolish and needs to realize it's 2009 and we're not living in the old times where things weren't accepted...so this interview didn't move me at all, b/c there was just too much rambunctious babble, and the whole punching thing, well that old geezer, needs a nice punch in the head to wake up and smell the coffee....so as a whole, I think that interview did nothing for anything....that's just my opinion. who really cares who's out and who's not. They're putting too much time and effort into this subject when there are more important things to worry about in the godforsaken country we live in.

Good post once again...but I just have to say hmmm, who cares....worry about more important issues. People aren't making movies about the ''straight'' people in office, so what the hell does it matter about making a movie about ''gays'' in office...

our lives are to be lived day by day and as long as someone's happy with the way they were born, that's all that matters...People just want attention doing things like this...i say drop it...move on, try to make a movie about something important. Now that's all my opinion and I'm openly gay and I hope more people just start not caring about their sex life and deal with the real problems we have in this country.

I think one of the sadeer things about this is a commentary on jounalism practices. Confrontational, aggressive and threatening? It used to be the responsibility of the journalist to present the story and allow the listener, viewer or reader to draw their own conclusion, regardless of the journalist's views on the topics. Kudos to Mike Rogers for keeping his cool and trying to present his story.

The show should be called "yackity yack yackity yack....Live" must be an off shoot of fox news, they ask a question then cut the person being asked the question off after 5 words. I would like to see 'senior moment man' and Mike Rogers go at it tho, less yacking, more face punching, lol. I'm such a dick.

If there was a woman in the Senate who tried to lobby against a woman's right to choose and she turned around and got an abortion - that is a hypocrisy that hurts an entire group of people. Nobody would sit around crying about how that would hurt her and her family. And that's a CHOICE, unlike being gay.

Good find! I'd have to agree with Rogers when he tells McKelway, "Clearly it's more personal to you than to anyone else i've met, ever!" (5:36)

As far as Rogers' attitude on the show, it's completely unprofessional. FYI, Rogers is compiling a list of WJLA staff e-mails, "As I said before, this would normally have been an incident, but as we learned from here, it's a long-term pattern!"

Your title catch is brilliant. hahaha. TALKS LIKE THESE NEED TO HAPPEN MORE!!!! MORE PEOPLE NEED TO DEBATE! GROUPS ALL need to debate. To feel heard to share their opinions without pointing fingers. Lighter hearts and stronger minds need to lead the people with issues. I hope both sides felt heard. I'm glad the anchor had the balls to ask for a contraction. And I'm sure some people heard "Gay bashing" when he said he'd pop him in the mouth....He wanted to stop that perception. As any male human would do. Gay or straight. Fight for what you believe.

"They've got a date now." hahaha brilliant. I love the fact that two men, gay or straight showed the same amount of testosterone while the woman being a strong woman sat back and observed the educated cavemen battle. But still let them know they acted both acted silly. They've got a date now. hahahahahaha

CORRECTION: McKelway's attitude was unprofessional (not Rogers', as I accidentally wrote above).

May 14, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJ. J.

I agree - that really isn't journalism at all...McKelway was simply looking for a platform to ramble on.
This is a tough one - people deserve privacy but to be a hypocrite AND a politician is just such a dangerous thing. And some of us miss the message. It's sort of like when Palin pretended to get all outraged at the media storm surrounding her pregnant teen daughter, instead of really understanding WHY it was an issue: abstinence with teens doesn't really work, not even in her own home.

I think Rogers is a prick for even CREATING such a movie, what business is it of his who is gay or not gay? Why don't I make a movie about people who jerk-off or eat doughnuts?! Who cares? It isn't my business, or anyone else's.

I am watcing Kirby and Rogers right now on The View on ABC and STILL maintain my opinion (as an ex -journalist and current freelance writer) that this is NOT journalism - it is bullying!!! Why should it matter?!?! This movie has me VERY ANGRY.
