May 26th: On This Day in 1896 - Dow Jones Debut

Charles DowMay 26, 1896: The Dow Jones Industrial Average was first published on this day in 1896, representing the average of twelve stocks from important American industries, and closing at 40.94. It was populated by heavy-industry stalwarts such as American Cotton Oil, Chicago Gas, National Lead, and General Electric. Even in its first year the average was prone to sudden fits and starts: It declined to its all-time low of 28.48 in August.
