June 1: On This Day in 1938 - First Superman Comic
June 1, 1938: Superman made his first appearance in the D.C. Action Comic Series: Issue #1, which sold for 10 cents. Superman was created by American writer Jerry Siegel and Canadian artist Joe Shuster.
Siegel and Shuster had tried for years, without success,to find a publisher for their Superman character, which was originally conceived as a newspaper strip. Superman was originally bald and described as "a madman" who had telepathic powers that were used to wreak havoc on society.
It was Siegel who asked, "What if Superman was a force for good instead of evil?" From this idea, the two of them worked on the Superman character for a National Periodical Publications project and submitted sample newspaper strips that they had prepared into comic book format. National liked it and used Superman on the cover of their new magazine.
Action Comics was followed by the Superman comic book series in 1939. Issue #1 remains one of the most famous and coveted covers of all-time.
