Propagandhi: Punk Powerhouse in Pomona, eh? (video)

Friday night was an event for the Caddel Family Memory Book. After being fans of the band Propagandhi for over fifteen years, Steve and I finally got to see them play LIVE at The Glass House in Pomona, California. Even better, we were able to take our three kids and Brynn's boyfriend, Keoni, with us, as The GH is an all-ages club and the perfect setting to witness my favorite punk band ever, rock like we knew they would. We had great spots in the very front, directly behind the barrier, over on the right-hand side; so we could see brilliantly, but weren't smack dab in the middle of all the chaos that typically goes down at a punk show.

Witnessing this incredible band play was not only fantastic entertainment-wise, but the importance of the experience was something extra meaningful to us because this band (more than any other band that we dig) encompasses our ideologies almost to a T.

Propagandhi is well-known for their activism regarding causes like:

  • sexism
  • homophobia
  • animal rights/liberation
  • racism
  • capitalism
  • religion
  • fascism
  • imperialism
  • human rights violations

They are vegans and are not only excellent musicians, but are well-read and well-written men with passionate, articulate messages to share. When we visited their merch table after the show, so that Aidan could buy a non-sweatshop/fair trade/organic cotton t-shirt, we discovered that half of their table was covered with excellent books (many of which we have in our home library) and reading material. Truth is a virus!

I feel like a kid in a candy store when I visit the "Resources" page on Propagandhi's website, because there is such an abundant array of information regarding books, films, art, anti-sweatshop resources, documentaries, news, commentary, etc., that I never know where to begin.

May 29th was a night that I will never forget and hope to repeat again in the future. I recorded video footage of five songs (in four videos) if you want to check them out, they are all on my YouTube channel (Haillie Sallasse, Back to the Motor League, A Speculative Fiction, Dear Coach's Corner, and Mate Ka Moris Ukun Rasik An). I will leave you with my video of A Speculative Fiction, because it's Steve's favorite Propa song.

Thank you, Propagandhi. Thank you for bringing awareness to the world through your messages. Thank you for standing for what you do. Thank you for using music as your voice to spread the truth and not as a tool to getting rich. Thank you for making a difference in my life and for not backing down. Thank you for one hell of a memorable night!
