July 7: On This Day in 1898: Hawaii Annexed by US
July 7, 1898: On this day, President Williman McKinley signed a resolution annexing Hawaii. Annexation is the legal incorporation of some territory into another geo-political entity (either adjacent or non-contiguous).
No change in government took place until 1900, when Congress passed an act making Hawaii an "incorporated" territory of the US. This act remained in effect until Hawaii became a state in 1959.
