Vegan Tattoo Number Two: Ink Ink, Oink Oink
Throughout the years that I have been collecting ink, the process has never become routine in any way for me. It's true. I still get just as excited and inspired by each new piece of art that I add to my skin as the first time I headed into a tattoo shop. The whole series of events, from choosing the image to the aftercare phase still WOWS me and I suppose that's why I keep on-keeping on in this respect.
My newest addition was tattooed by Mike DeVries, whom I have racked up over 180 hours worth of work from over the years. The other day, Steve and I counted out each piece, hour-wise, that Mike has done for me since he first started on the octopus that sits on my throat/chest over four years ago and couldn't believe it when we hit the total button on the calculator. Poor Mike has had to endure my chatter for over 180 hours of his life.
No, really... there is obviously a reason I own so much of his ink and that's because he produces pieces like this:
I love my new pig portrait. It sits above Miss Cow and the two of them are the beginning of a vegan-themed sleeve we are now plotting and planning for future sessions (I also have this VEGAN text piece on my chin). This new addition was a two-sitting, 10.5 hour tattoo. Mike worked for about 6.5 hours on it last month and almost 4 hours this past Thursday before he put the final stamp of approval on my smiling piggy.
You can see more of Mike's work here. If you are interested in making an appointment with Mr. DeVries, you can contact him through his website. He tends to be booked out many months in advance (sometimes 6-8 months) so take the time to find clear reference photos, confer with him about your ideas and know that he's worth the wait.
Oink, oink!
