How Your Positive Vibes Can Inspire Others and Influence Behavior

Have you ever noticed how much of an impact your own behavior and attitude can have on others? Sometimes when one's day is off to a lousy start or might just be in need of some understanding, a positive boost from YOU can be golden!

And the best effect of helping to have an impact on others is that it usually rubs off on YOU as well. Being kind not only makes you feel better, but sets a contagious pattern of behavior into motion.

Here are a few really simple ideas to try out next time you see someone who could benefit from your compassion and good vibes:

Expect the Best: There are times when everyone just wants to be left alone, but you never know when someone really needs a smile and a pick-me-up. So expect the best in others and approach in a positive manner.

Listen: It's a simple concept, but really...sometimes a listening ear can do wonders. Try not to take over the conversation - just listen, take time to understand and really care about what the person is sharing with you.

*This can be vocally, through an in-person conversation, or even through written words in an email or text. Sometimes just getting things off your chest and having the opportunity to vent for a moment clears out the negative to start anew.

Offer Stories of Your Own: If you have experiences that are similar to what one is going through, offer them up. Knowing that someone else has gone through trying times and had tough days helps us all to know that we aren't alone.

Give Off Good Vibes: The mood you bring to the table and the energy you respond with is what it's all about. Smile, care, and show someone that they matter just by being kind and positive.

Smile and Laugh: Even if the opportunity isn't perfect for engaging in a conversation, a kind smile, a warm greeting, a joke, or a dose of laughter can set the tone for good things to come.

Encourage: Even if it's the smallest gesture, let someone know that they matter by complimenting something they have done or provide affirmation that they matter, that you care, and that you have confidence in them. It doesn't have to be anything overwhelming...sometimes the smallest actions have the biggest impact.

Don't Wait: If the opportunity presents itself and you have a chance to make a difference, go for it! Be the change that you want to see.

i was in a kind of down mood yesterday and even was a bit crabby....then i read this and realized if i stay in this mood it's going to impact everyone around me...so i told a lil joke out of left field (did you hear about the guy who cut off his whole left side....don't worry he's ALL RIGHT now) made people laugh and couldn't even remember why i was a grump anyways. whenever i need a little pick me up or inspiration all i have to do is come here...and i can't help but smile. This reminds me a lot of a workshop I did in my Peace and Conflict Studies course on empathetic listening. It was a bit different and focused less on your personal interaction with the other person in the conversation, but it was really great to work through. I'll have to see if I can find a copy or link somewhere online to show them to you - I think you'd really love it, and you already exude nearly every quality they encourage one to have in empathetic listening!
