Word of the Day: April 7, 2009 ~ candy
candy (kan-dee) - noun
The word candy means "any of a variety of confections made with sugar, syrup, etc., often combined with chocolate, fruit, or nuts."
Was first used around 1225–75; from the Old French sugre candi, which means candied sugar.
The Sanskrit word khanda means "a piece or something" or "a lump of sugar." The two words sarkara khanda seem to be represented in the Italian form, zucchero candi, our familiar sugar candy - which is interesting to note, because until recent times, candy was not just called candy, but sugar candy.
