Word of the Day: June 10, 2009 - redundant
redundant (ri-duhn-duhnt) - adjective
Redundancy is "characterized by verbosity or unnecessary repetition in expressing ideas."
First used in the written form around 1595–1605. Etymologically, something that is redundant "overflows" because there is too much of it. The word comes from the present participle of Latin redundāre, meaning "flow back, overflow" (source of the English redound). This was a compound verb formed from the prefix re- (back, again) and undāre (rise in waves, surge) a derivative of unda, meaning "wave."
