Did You Know There Was Once a US State Called Franklin?

Until 1796, there was a state in the United States called Franklin.  Today it is known as Tennessee.

The State of Franklin was an autonomous, seccessionist United States territory that was created shortly after the American Revolution.  This territory was later ceded by North Carolina to the federal government and became part of the state of Tennessee.

Franklin existed for four years, though it was never officially admitted into the Union.
